Tour Victoria's High Country

Tour Our Region

Nestled in Victoria’s north-east, the High Country has highlights around every corner. Think heritage towns, world-renowned wineries and stunning vistas in every direction!

Milawa Gourmet Region

It’s a bold town that claims the title “Gourmet Region,” but Milawa more than lives up to its promise (and has done for over 30 years).

Enjoy stunning wineries, amazing restaurants, fresh farm gate produce, boutique shopping, and a meander along the art trail. The Milawa Gourmet Region is a short 10 minute drive or easy cycle from Wangaratta (we have e-bikes for hire).

Our favourites include: Brown Brothers (dining experiences), Milawa Cheese Factory cheese (tastings and pastries), Sam Miranda (cellar door).

Beechworth

A picturesque 38 kilometres from Wangaratta, Beechworth is one of Victoria's most beautifully preserved heritage towns with a gold mining history and affiliation with the Ned Kelly story.

Art galleries, heritage museums, wineries, restaurants, bakeries, short walks in nature and cycle trails abound.

Our staff favourites include: Project 49 (coffee), Tanswell’s (classic country pub), Woolshed Falls (scenery) and Eldorado Road (cellar door).

Rutherglen

A half hour drive from Wangaratta, Rutherglen is an old gold-rush town with 160 years of winemaking history.

Offering heritage buildings, highly regarded restaurants, cafes, award winning pie shops, and an abundance of wine experiences, the Rutherglen region offers our guests a perfect day out.

Our ‘local’ favourites include: Scion Winery (cellar door), Grace (dining experience), All Saints (cellar door and pizza).

Wangaratta

Experience the naturally beautiful scenery, heritage and culinary delights of Wangaratta (our home town!)

Wander the streets and immerse yourself in the history, discover the local’s favourite spots, lush parks, walking and cycling trails, the Ovens River, a vibrant retail centre and cultural precinct.

Our favourites include: Rees and Rees Lifestyle Merchants (retail), Wangaratta Art Gallery (exhibitions), Bullawah Cultural Trail (walk or cycle) and the towering gum trees in Merriwa Park.

King Valley

The King Valley has a long history of Chinese and Italian migration, but more recently, it’s the vines from Italy that have earned it the moniker “a little slice of Italy”.

The Prosecco, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera styles, have earned the Valley its reputation for uniquely-flavoured, memorable wines.

Local favourites include: Dalzotto Winery (pioneers of Prosecco!), Christmont (dining experience), Pizzini Wines (cellar door, cooking school) and if time permits add Lake William Hovell, Paradise Falls and Harry Power Lookout to your itinerary!

Glenrowan

Needing no introduction as the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand (visit the recently opened interpretive centre to learn more), Glenrowan deserves equal fame for its full-bodied reds and fortified wines.

The sweeping views from the Warby Ranges State Park over Lake Mokoan also offer a rich reward for bushwalkers and birdwatchers looking to adventure outdoors.

Our favourites include: Interpretive Centre (start the Ned Trail), Baileys (cellar door), Winton Wetlands (walking, canoeing, bird watching).

Beautiful moments shared by our guests.

Guest Reviews

“From start to finish, this was an amazing experience. Check-in was warm and welcoming, and the hotel restaurant was a standout with great ambience, a steak that rivalled top steakhouses, and an incredible local shiraz. Everything on the plate was fantastic. The room was spacious with a very comfortable bed, and the shower was hot with excellent pressure. On departure, I found a note saying my windscreen had been cleaned as a complimentary gesture. An exceptional stay, highly recommend.“

“We have stayed here on several occasions over many years and can vouch for the quality of service and presentation. Everything works as it should - air-conditioning, clocks, TV, booking, parking… It should be a given, but many other motels fail on the basics! Thank you to the staff for your commitment to quality service and friendliness, from the excellent restaurant meals to the cleaning of our car windscreen!“
